The Honolulu High-Capacity Transit Corridor Project is a 20-mile, elevated rail line proposed for the island of O'ahu. The East-West route would connect Kapolei in West O'ahu with the urban core of Honolulu. The roads and H-1 freeway between Kapolei and Honolulu have some of the nation's worst rush hour traffic.
Extensive study in the Alternatives Analysis, including evaluating options such as increasing bus service and building High Occupancy Toll lanes, shows that an elevated rail line will bring the largest reduction in future traffic congestion in this corridor. The Alternatives Analysis demonstrates that by the year 2030, rail will shrink peak hour traffic congestion by 11 percent.
The proposed rail transit system has additional features:
- Mobility. Rail would be another public transportation option between Honolulu and the growing population on the island's West side.
- Economy. Construction of the rail line would create an estimated 11,000 new jobs.
- Environment. Rail transit is endorsed by the Sierra Club nationally and the O'ahu chapter supports Honolulu's proposed rail line.
- Communities. Cities as diverse as Portland, Denver, Washington, DC, and Charlotte have shown that transit-oriented development along rail routes can create more sustainable communities.
